Prophecies and the Emperor of the End of Time at the Court of Alfonso X

Prof. Dr. Carlos Estepa Díez

Alfonso the Wise, king of Castile (1252-1284) and Emperor Elect of the Holy Roman Empire, carried out extraordinary cultural activity, displayed in his works dealing with many different topics (legislation, history, natural sciences, religious poetry, games, etc.). The aim of this project is to analyse the extent to which the ideas about the existence of an Emperor of the End of Time were present at the court of Alfonso, both in his works, particularly in his books on astrology (‘Libros del saber de astronomía, Lapidario’ and ‘Libro de las formas & ymagenes’), and in his policy on major issues, such as the empire, royal power, the spread of Christendom and the Crusades.
