Welcome!

The conference "Human Nature, Morality, and Fate in the Tsinghua University Bamboo Manuscripts, Tang chu yu Tang qiu 湯處於湯丘, Tang zai chi men 湯在啻門, and Yin Gaozong wen yu san shou 殷高宗問于三壽" will be held in Erlangen, Germany, on May 10-12, 2016. The manuscripts in the focus of the conference were recently published in volume 5 of the edition of bamboo manuscripts held at Tsinghua University (清華大學藏戰國竹簡).

The conference is organized by the International Consortium for Research in the Humanities (IKGF) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, in cooperation with the Research and Conservation Center for Excavated Texts, Tsinghua University, and Dartmouth College. It is convened by Sarah Allan, Dartmouth College, and Michael Lüdke, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

The conference will continue the tradition of bamboo-slip reading workshops and conferences established at Dartmouth College. With choosing Erlangen as a venue, the conveners hope to bring together the discussion of human nature and morality, which often has been at the center of the Dartmouth workshops, and the work on fate and prognostication conducted at the International Consortium.

Scholars from the Research and Conservation Center for Excavated Texts, Tsinghua University, who have been responsible for the "zhengli" and transcription of the manuscripts will introduce their work and participate in the discussion. The conference will focus on a close reading - graph by graph and line by line. From this base the discussion will extend to broader philosophical and historical implications of their content.

The conference will include both formal papers and detailed collective reading of the manuscripts. All participants will engage in the collective reading and discussion. Scholars presenting written papers will submit them before April 30, 2016, in order to make them available at this web site.
